Raytec has developed a tailored lighting solution for a chemical production plant in the Netherlands to solve automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) challenges. While infrared illumination is commonly used in ANPR and LPR (Licence Plate Recognition) systems, experience shows that it does not always provide optimal results with certain number plates, especially those with red characters. This problem is common in Belgium, the Middle East and parts of the USA. At the Dutch plant, it affected the efficiency of the automated barrier and access system.
Pulsed white light for accurate detection
To ensure clear and reliable capture of the number plates, Raytec used its Pulsestar W32 white light LEDs. These were installed at the three access gates to the facility and synchronised with the camera shutter technology. This ensures that the lighting is only activated when a vehicle enters the detection area, which saves energy, extends the lifespan of the lighting and avoids overexposure caused by headlights. ‘Our main objective was seamless data collection at the factory entrances. Raytec’s intelligent pulsed white light technology ensures accurate capture of number plates, day or night,’ explains Henk Bogers of Akkadia.
Lighting for hazardous industrial environments
In addition to the ANPR lighting, Raytec also provided a customised solution for general factory lighting. The Spartan FL24 Flood Zone 2 luminaires installed at the chemical plant are specifically certified for use in hazardous areas, providing high performance, durability and easy maintenance. With this comprehensive solution, Raytec was able to provide reliable and energy-efficient lighting that improves both safety and operational efficiency at the industrial plant.
