With the Bavarian state government’s latest decision to increase investment in video surveillance and drone defence by more than €4 million, Bavaria is sending a clear signal: the safety of its citizens will remain a top priority in the future. This strategically astute decision not only demonstrates the state’s commitment, but also shows foresight in dealing with new challenges.
3.8 million euros alone will be invested in expanding video surveillance in public places and crime hotspots. Modern camera systems deter potential offenders and provide valuable support to the police in preventive crime fighting. Seamless surveillance loops will further reduce the number of unreported crimes, enabling crimes to be detected and solved more quickly. The case in the Old Botanical Garden in Munich, where high-resolution camera images enabled a serious outbreak of violence to be quickly resolved and the perpetrator apprehended, is a prime example of the success of such measures.
At the same time, the renewal and digitisation of the video infrastructure will enable planned innovations such as artificial intelligence for image recognition to be seamlessly integrated. This will particularly benefit smaller police stations that have not yet had access to the latest technology. A comprehensive and intelligently networked system will ensure that Bavaria remains safe even as the demands of an increasingly digital world grow.
In addition, €550,000 will be spent on further developing specialised drone detection and defence systems. Unmanned aerial vehicles pose a growing threat, especially in the vicinity of critical infrastructure. The fact that Bavaria has already gained successful experience at UEFA Euro 2024 underlines the professionalism and commitment of the Bavarian security authorities. The targeted expansion of this technology gives the police a decisive advantage in terms of seconds: drones are detected at an early stage, potential danger scenarios are analysed and, in an emergency, disruptive measures or defensive reactions can be initiated immediately.
In times of global tension, the protection of power plants, airports and government buildings is essential. Investing in drone defence is therefore not only a contribution to internal security, but also an important building block for preserving Bavaria’s innovative strength and economic power. After all, only in a reliable security environment can companies grow and research institutions continue their work without restrictions.
It should be emphasised that all data collected is used exclusively for police purposes and is subject to strict data protection regulations. Civil rights and privacy are protected while the highest security standards are maintained. This coordinated balancing act between freedom and security is a central feature of a modern security architecture.
The decision by the Bavarian State Parliament shows how closely politics, administration and society are working together. The additional funding demonstrates confidence in the Bavarian police’s ability to innovate and sends a strong signal: Bavaria will remain the safest state in Germany in the future. With these forward-looking measures, the Free State is excellently equipped to respond flexibly to new threats and further strengthen the sense of security of all citizens.
