The number of burglaries in Saxony-Anhalt fell again in 2024. According to the police crime statistics (PKS), a total of 1,696 cases were registered – a decrease of 72 cases compared to the previous year (1,768). This is the first time that the 1,700 crime mark has been undercut.
Long-term trend confirms decline
Minister of Home Affairs Dr Tamara Zieschang views this development as positive: ‘Since 2016, the number of burglaries has fallen by almost 45 per cent. In addition to improved burglary protection, flexible working models such as home office have favoured this trend.’

Urban areas continue to be particularly affected: 279 and 233 crimes were registered by the police in Magdeburg and Halle (Saale), respectively.
Focus remains on prevention measures
Despite the positive development, Zieschang emphasises the necessity of continued prevention work: ‘Citizens should remain vigilant and take burglary protection measures. The police offer free advice.’
The Saxony-Anhalt state police will continue to focus on the “Safe living with burglary protection” campaign in 2024/2025, with a particular focus on large landlords. In addition, the State Office of Criminal Investigation provides information via the state prevention mobile unit and through individual counselling sessions on site or at police stations.
