20.5 percent more corporate insolvencies in the first half of 2023 than in the first half of 2022

According to provisional data from the Federal Statistical Office (https://destatis.de) (Destatis), the number of filed regular insolvencies in Germany rose by 13.8 percent in August compared to the same month last year. In July 2023, it had already increased by 23.8 per cent compared to July 2022.

In the first half of 2023, German district courts reported 8,571 corporate insolvencies filed for, according to final results. This was 20.5 per cent more than in the same period last year.
The claims of creditors from the corporate insolvencies reported in the first half of 2023 were put by the district courts at around 13.9 billion euros. In the first half of 2022, the claims had been around 8.2 billion euros.

33,140 private individuals affected

In relation to 10,000 companies, there were 25.3 corporate insolvencies in Germany in the first half of 2023. Most of the insolvencies per 10,000 companies were in the transport and storage sector with 54.1 cases. This is followed by other sectors such as temporary employment agencies with 41.3 cases.
The lowest insolvency frequency, with 2.4 insolvencies per 10,000 companies, was – unsurprisingly – in the energy supply sector. In the first half of 2023, there were 33,140 consumer insolvencies. This means that the number of consumer insolvencies in the first half of 2023 fell by 1.9 percent compared to the first six months of the previous year.
