Axis Communications launches dual-sensor box camera for perimeter protection

April 17, 2025

Axis Communications introduces the new AXIS P1518-LE Box Camera, a highly innovative dual-sensor series that enables both wide-area outdoor coverage and detailed close-ups of the same scene in a single device. This first in the Axis portfolio is aimed specifically at operators of critical infrastructure and businesses that want comprehensive security coverage without multiple camera locations.

The AXIS P1518-LE combines two image sensors in a robust box chassis. A large 1/1.2-inch sensor delivers 4K images at eight megapixels at 30 frames per second for high-resolution monitoring of large areas, even in difficult lighting conditions. At the same time, a 1/2.8-inch sensor captures highly dynamic close-ups in Full HD at 60 frames per second without motion blur. This configuration allows you to accurately capture both the surroundings and access routes as well as people or licence plate details in areas such as entrance areas or driveways.

The new camera also sets new standards at night and in complete darkness: the proven Lightfinder 2.0 technology ensures natural colours and low image noise, while Forensic WDR preserves all details even in high-contrast scenes. This is complemented by OptimizedIR lighting, which uses intelligent LED control to evenly illuminate the entire image area and reliably capture long distances.

For situational adjustments in the field, the AXIS P1518-LE features a telephoto lens with motorised remote zoom and focus, as well as pan and tilt settings. Planners and installers can easily adjust the image frame remotely after installation, reducing time and maintenance.

Another technological milestone is the integrated Deep Learning Processing Unit (DLPU), which, in conjunction with the pre-installed AXIS Object Analytics analysis software, recognises, classifies and tracks people, vehicles and vehicle types directly ‘on the edge’. Metadata for object recognition is generated in real time, enabling fast forensic searches in live and recorded video material – without the need for external server capacity.

Cyber security and environmental resilience are provided by Axis Edge Vault, a hardware-based platform compliant with FIPS 140-3 Level 3. The camera also meets protection classes IK10, IP66/67 and NEMA 4X, making it resistant to wind speeds of up to 60 m/s. This makes it suitable even for use in maritime installations or wind-swept industrial areas.

‘In many surveillance scenarios, it is crucial to obtain both wide-area views and meaningful detail shots without having to install multiple devices,’ explains Benjamin Körner, Architect & Engineering Manager at Axis Communications. ’The AXIS P1518-LE offers exactly this flexibility, combining excellent image quality with powerful AI capabilities while reducing total cost of ownership.’

The AXIS P1518-LE Box Camera is available now. The AXIS P1518-E variant without integrated infrared illumination will follow in the third quarter of 2025; this can be supplemented with the separate AXIS TQ1919-E IR Illuminator Kit if required.
