BITKOM: Employment prospects in the digital industry remain positive in 2023

The employment outlook in the digital economy remains positive in 2023. 3 out of 10 (30 percent) of IT and telecommunications companies plan to increase their workforce this year. Around two-thirds (62 percent) expect the number of employees to remain stable. Only about one in twelve digital companies (8 percent) will cut jobs in 2023. This is shown by the current Bitkom-ifo Digital Index. This means that the employment outlook in the German digital economy is better than in the economy as a whole, where 19 percent of the companies expect the number of employees to increase, 71 percent to remain unchanged and 10 percent to decrease. “German digital companies are still looking for new employees in 2023,” says Bitkom President Achim Berg. “This is good news for the labour market, but also for everyone planning their professional future in the digital economy.”

Note on methodology: The data is based on the monthly ifo Business Survey. Data from the digital industry, which is made up of companies in the manufacturing, trade and services sectors, is taken into account. This includes manufacturers of IT and communication technology, consumer electronics, providers of software and IT services, telecommunication services as well as wholesale and retail trade with ICT. Weighting is based on the number of employees. The survey was conducted in December 2022.
