Standard in both professional and private contexts – BITKOM survey of 887 internet users

Every day, an average of ten e-mails land in the private e-mail inbox of Internet users in Germany. Around a third receive only one to four e-mails a day, and nine percent even receive 30 e-mails or more, according to a survey of 887 users conducted by the digital association BITKOM.

“Standard digital communication”
While 16- to 29-year-olds receive an average of eleven private emails per day, 30- to 49-year-olds receive ten and 50-year-olds and older receive nine emails per day. “Although e-mail is now over 50 years old, it is still part of the standard of digital communication – not only in a professional context but also in a private one,” says BITKOM expert Sebastian Klöß.
The big advantage of e-mails: unlike messengers, for example, they work independently of the provider: Anyone who knows the e-mail address of the person they are talking to can send them a message without having to register with a special service themselves. “In addition, you can easily create several email addresses for different purposes, such as for communicating with friends, for newsletters or online purchases,” says Klöß.
