High-resolution imaging for traffic monitoring: Axis Communications launches the AXIS P1486-LE Global Shutter Camera

The first bullet camera with global shutter technology from Axis Communications enables particularly precise and distortion-free capture of vehicles and number plates in traffic monitoring

Axis Communications, a technology provider in the field of network video, is launching the AXIS P1486-LE Global Shutter Camera, the first Axis network camera to feature global shutter technology. Unlike conventional rolling-shutter sensors, which read out images row by row, global shutter technology captures the entire image synchronously in a single instant by reading out all the sensor’s pixel information simultaneously. This prevents motion blur, even with very fast movements – such as passing vehicles – and delivers more accurate results.

The new AXIS P1486-LE Global Shutter Camera is fitted with a light-sensitive 1/1.8-inch CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) sensor featuring global shutter technology. It also features integrated, constant stroboscopic infrared illumination and a 10–40-millimetre telephoto lens with a horizontal field of view ranging from 44 to 11 degrees. Thanks to this combination of technologies, the bullet camera is able to read out all the sensor’s pixels simultaneously, thereby capturing a complete, high-quality image.

Thanks to Axis OptimizedIR, the global shutter camera delivers clear, distortion-free images at distances of up to 80 metres, even in complete darkness. It also reliably captures fast-moving objects such as motor vehicles, including their number plates. The TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) output allows the camera to be connected to third-party LED strobe lights. The integrated TTL pulse control precisely synchronises the light pulses in real time with image capture, enabling razor-sharp, optimally illuminated images even at high vehicle speeds, in which relevant details inside the vehicle – such as a seatbelt not being worn or the use of a mobile phone whilst driving – are also visible. At the same time, the external strobe lighting reduces the spotlights’ energy consumption and heat generation.

Various AI-powered image analysis and cost-saving features

Based on the ARTPEC-9 System-on-Chip (SoC) developed in-house by Axis Communications, the camera supports the AV1 video codec and offers a range of advanced, AI-powered analysis features. These include AXIS Image Health Analytics, an application that continuously monitors image quality in real time and notifies the user as soon as the camera view is obstructed or the lens is dirty, as well as AXIS Object Analytics, an analytics software that detects, classifies, tracks and counts objects within the field of view.

In addition, AXIS Live Privacy Shield enables dynamic privacy masking to protect the privacy of individuals within the field of view in compliance with data protection regulations.

The camera performs these powerful, AI-powered analytics directly on the device ‘at the edge’ via an integrated deep learning processing unit (DLPU). The relevant data is also processed locally, which significantly reduces requirements for data transmission, bandwidth and server capacity – and thus, indirectly, operating costs. Axis Zipstream, with support for AV1, H.265 and H.264, further reduces bandwidth and storage requirements for the transmission and storage of video data without compromising image quality.

Easy to install, operate and maintain

The robust, shock-resistant camera offers numerous features that make it particularly suitable for use in road traffic: electronic image stabilisation ensures smooth footage even in the event of jolts and vibrations. Furthermore, the camera is designed to withstand temperatures ranging from -40 to +60 degrees Celsius and wind speeds of up to 60 m/s, and is exceptionally easy to install, operate and maintain. It can be powered via both direct current and Power over Ethernet (PoE). Furthermore, Axis Edge Vault – a hardware-based cybersecurity platform that safeguards device integrity and enables the execution of secure operations based on cryptographic keys – provides an environment certified to the US FIPS 140-3 Level 3 standard for the storage, management and use of these keys.
