Increase in ransomware attacks in Switzerland – focus on the ‘Akira’ group

October 17, 2025

In Switzerland, IT security authorities and analysts are seeing a noticeable increase in targeted ransomware attacks. The focus is particularly on the hacker group ‘Akira’, which, according to recent security reports, is said to have attacked several companies in the region in recent times.

The cybercriminals typically use encrypted data extortion in combination with data leaks to put pressure on affected organisations. In addition to traditional industrial companies, service providers, SMEs and public institutions are also increasingly affected. Experts estimate that the financial damage caused by these attacks is considerable, amounting to hundreds of millions of pounds worldwide.

Consequences for Central Europe

The strong economic ties between Switzerland, Germany and Austria pose an additional risk: compromised service providers or supply chain partners can indirectly endanger other companies in Central Europe. Security experts therefore recommend increased monitoring of IT systems and preventive protective measures against ransomware.

Recommended measures

  1. Introduce zero-trust security strategies to strictly control access
  2. Perform regular data backups and store them separately from the network
  3. Keep emergency and recovery plans up to date and test them regularly
  4. Raise awareness among employees to recognise social engineering attacks
  5. Use automated threat detection systems with AI support

This development clearly shows that cybersecurity has become a strategic success factor for companies of all sizes. Further background information and analyses can be found at Computerworld Switzerland (source: computerworld.ch).
