Light + Building 2026 showcases the industry’s innovative momentum

March 13, 2026

Light + Building 2026 clearly demonstrated the momentum with which innovation is currently developing in the industry. From 8 to 13 March 2026, 1,927 exhibitors from 49 countries presented a wide range of technologically advanced solutions in Frankfurt am Main – from the electrification and connectivity of buildings and urban spaces to sophisticated lighting and design concepts for architecture, urban planning and interiors. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, bidirectional charging, multifunctional interfaces and connected lighting solutions in particular shaped numerous products and signalled the next stage of development for buildings, cities and lighting design.

Over the six days, a total of 144,767 visitors from 143 countries came to Frankfurt am Main. Most international guests travelled from China, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, Belgium, the UK, Spain and Greece. Restrictions on international air travel, as well as the current geopolitical situation in the Middle East with temporary closures of key aviation hubs, particularly in Dubai, meant that not all visitors were able to travel as planned. Regardless of this, the event confirmed its strong roots in Germany as well as in Central and Western Europe, and once again underlined its significance as an international industry gathering for industry, trade, planning and architecture.

“Light + Building 2026 has once again demonstrated just how incredibly innovative and forward-looking this sector is,” says Wolfgang Marzin, Chairman of the Executive Board of Messe Frankfurt. “At the same time, it shows just how important face-to-face encounters and direct exchange are – especially in times like these. Light + Building fulfils its purpose: it brings together people from industry, trade, planning and design, thereby creating the basis for dialogue, cooperation and new ideas. This exchange strengthens the cohesion of the sector and provides important impetus for its further development. The future lies in electrification.”

Light + Building 2026 concluded with a very high level of visitor satisfaction. 95 per cent of visitors were satisfied overall with their visit to the fair and stated that they had achieved their objectives; just as many rated the exhibition offering positively.

Buildings – from energy consumers to active systems

In the building sector, Light + Building 2026 clearly demonstrated that buildings are evolving from mere energy consumers into active components of a smart energy system. Smart energy distribution, integrated load and charging management, and bidirectional charging are increasingly linking buildings, the grid and e-mobility, opening up new possibilities for energy efficiency and system stability. At the same time, the focus shifted more strongly to the existing building stock: modular, scalable solutions facilitate energy-efficient modernisation and make retrofitting efficient and economically viable. Digital planning and operating concepts, as well as multifunctional interfaces, simplify installation and operation, whilst secure charging infrastructure and reliable systems for critical applications are gaining in importance. The industry is thus driving forward the next stage of development in building technology with the aim of making buildings holistic, flexible and future-proof.

Light – intelligently controlled and atmospherically staged

In the lighting sector, it became clear that lighting is increasingly evolving into a data-driven, adaptive system. Sensors, connected luminaires and AI-supported controls enable precise, demand-driven light distribution that automatically adapts to occupancy, daylight and usage scenarios. Across all application areas – from private living spaces through to the hospitality and retail sectors, and on to industry and urban infrastructure – the focus was on connected, flexibly scalable solutions. At the same time, light remains a central design element in interior architecture: high-quality luminaires, diverse design languages and finely tuned light colours create atmosphere, guide perception and enhance the quality of the environment. Sustainable materials, durable components and recyclable product designs underline the industry’s long-term focus. The trend is thus clearly moving towards a new generation of holistic lighting concepts that combine technological precision with emotional impact.

Design, AI and the next generation set new trends

The high-quality programme of events also provided impetus for the next stage of innovation. The Design Plaza in Hall 3.1 served as the hub for lighting and design themes. Here, current developments in lighting design were contextualised, design trends highlighted and forward-looking projects presented. Among the guests was ‘Women in Lighting’, which promoted international exchange within the lighting industry. The electrical trade also made its mark, laying the foundations for the ‘ElektroHeldinnen’ initiative, which raises the profile of women in the trade and facilitates targeted networking. The “Young Design” area also attracted considerable attention, where selected emerging designers provided fresh inspiration with innovative materials, experimental luminaires and clear conceptual approaches. In Hall 9, the AI Lounge drew numerous visitors: The highly sought-after sessions demonstrated in a practical way how artificial intelligence is taking planning, operation and business models in building services engineering to a new level. The new special exhibition “The Living Light” placed lighting within the context of the living areas of Home, Education, Work and Communication, and illustrated how light provides orientation, shapes moods and supports human interaction, concentration and motivation.

With the Power Festival, Light + Building further expanded its commitment to the next generation of the electrical trade. In the Galleria between Halls 8 and 9, a vibrant meeting place was created for apprentices, journeymen, master craftsmen and industry – featuring a workshop street, practical challenges, occupational safety seminars, as well as talks and live content from well-known creators in the trade. The format combined exchange, practical experience and community. The concept also included a charity initiative: on three exercise bikes, visitors cycled kilometres for a good cause. Light + Building topped up the amount and donated a total of 10,000 euros to the German Children’s Aid Foundation to promote equal educational opportunities and enable children to start school with the right equipment.
