Obituary: Klaus Dirr – A Pioneer of Technical Security

November 30, 2025

Klaus Dirr passed away at the beginning of November at the age of 87. His death marks the loss of a pioneering figure whose work profoundly influenced the technical evolution of the German security industry for several decades.

Dirr became involved with the Technical Committee of the Federal Association of the Security Industry (BDSW) in 1998. Two years later, he assumed the chairmanship, a role he held for ten years. During his tenure, he championed in-depth discussions on emerging technologies and worked tirelessly to ensure that innovative, practical security concepts were made accessible to member companies.

A hallmark of his leadership was his dedication to strengthening collaboration across industry bodies and expert institutions. Under his guidance, the exchange with VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH was significantly expanded, helping to shape new guidelines with a strong emphasis on practical application. His personal commitment also fostered closer relations with the Federal Association for Security Technology (BHE).

Beyond his committee responsibilities, Dirr served on the BDSW collective bargaining commission for North Rhine-Westphalia from 1998 onward, contributing consistently to the development of sector-wide labor agreements. Professionally, he helped shape the security industry over more than four decades as managing director of Wach- und Alarmbereitschaft Niederrhein GmbH in Moers and WAB Grenzland GmbH in Kempen—two long-standing companies that have been part of the association since 1948.

Klaus Dirr was widely regarded as a dedicated expert who not only kept pace with technological progress but actively helped drive it. His professionalism, collegial spirit, and sustained commitment will remain in the memories of many throughout the industry.

Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this time of loss.
