Optimising Perimeter Security at Tommy Dowd Oil with OPTEX REDWALL Sensors

December 1, 2025

Tommy Dowd Oil, a family-run fuel distributor in County Meath, Ireland, operates multiple sites secured with monitored CCTV systems and motion sensors to ensure both security and operational oversight. Despite these measures, recurring false alarms across all locations disrupted surveillance operations and undermined overall system effectiveness. Total Security Solutions was engaged to address these challenges.

The primary cause of the false alarms was environmental factors, particularly changing weather conditions. These frequent false alerts created operational inefficiencies and heightened the risk of alarm fatigue. Enhancing perimeter reliability and detection accuracy was therefore essential for the company.

Implementation of OPTEX REDWALL PIR Sensors

To resolve the issue, the existing motion detectors were replaced with OPTEX REDWALL PIR sensors, known for their stability, long-range accuracy, and seamless integration with CCTV analytics. A key feature is their adaptive environmental resistance: the sensors automatically adjust sensitivity according to temperature and lighting conditions. This capability significantly reduces false alarms triggered by environmental factors while maintaining reliable detection of genuine intrusion attempts.

Following installation, Total Security Solutions calibrated each site by optimising sensor alignment, adjusting sensitivity and tracking parameters, and verifying integration with existing CCTV systems.

Results and Operational Benefits

Post-retrofit, the sites experienced a marked reduction in false alarms. Perimeter security became both stable and precise, while CCTV monitoring reliability increased substantially. Tommy Dowd Oil regained confidence in its security infrastructure and expressed satisfaction with the enhanced system performance.

A company spokesperson noted:
“The installation of the OPTEX REDWALL sensors has met our expectations. They integrate perfectly with our CCTV systems and provide precise tracking. We anticipate a significant reduction in false alarms and look forward to implementing this solution at additional sites.”

Sensors Deployed

  • SIP-404: Outdoor long-range PIR, 40 x 4 m, ideal for small to medium-sized areas, with Detection Logic Selector
  • SIP-3020WF: Outdoor long-range PIR, 30 x 20 m, battery-powered
  • SIP-4010WF: Outdoor long-range PIR, 40 x 10 m, battery-powered

This upgrade provides Tommy Dowd Oil with a reliable, high-performance security solution that minimises false alarms and significantly improves operational monitoring across all locations.

Keith from Total Security Solutions added: “We selected OPTEX REDWALLs because they are the leading PIR sensors for CCTV integration and tracking. They address our main goal of reducing false alarms and allow us to optimise security across all sites efficiently.”
