First camera with ARTPEC-9: Axis Communications launches AXIS Q1728 Block Camera

The first camera with the 9th generation of the ARTPEC system-on-chip offers 4K image quality, AI-based analysis and AV1 support

Axis Communications, the technology leader in network video, is launching AXIS Q1728 Block Camera, the first network camera based on Axis’ new ARTPEC-9 system-on-chip. It offers excellent image quality, even in challenging light conditions, and powerful AI-based analytics ‘on the edge’. Thanks to its standardised design, it fits into most housings, including Axis and third-party housings.

AXIS Q1728 Block Camera is the first Axis network camera based on the new ARTPEC-9 system-on-chip. This was developed by Axis to meet the requirements of the security industry and supports – for the first time in video security – the open-source AV1 video codec from the Alliance for Open Media (AOM). In the area of AI-based video analytics, the system-on-chip also enables more precise and differentiated classification between different object classes – with high image quality, low bit rate and improved cybersecurity.

An integrated deep learning processing unit (DLPU) and the pre-installed AXIS Object Analytics solution enable advanced and powerful real-time analytics to be carried out on the edge, i.e. directly on the camera itself. This allows the camera to better detect, classify and count people, vehicles and vehicle types. Axis Zipstream with AV1 and H.264/H.265 support ensures lower bandwidth and storage requirements, making video transmission easy, both on-premise and in the cloud. AXIS Image Health Analytics ensures image quality and the camera’s field of view, while AXIS Live Privacy Shield provides AI-based dynamic masking to ensure privacy and data protection. Axis Edge Vault, a hardware-based cybersecurity platform certified to the US FIPS 140-3 Level 3 cybersecurity standard, ensures device security.

Flexible, high-quality image quality in 4K

The 8-megapixel camera, which is particularly suitable for indoor applications, offers excellent 4K image quality at 60 frames per second. The large 1/1.2’ sensor ensures high light sensitivity even in difficult lighting conditions and in the dark. To do this, the camera uses the proven Lightfinder 2.0 technology and Forensic WDR.

The camera is available with both a wide-angle lens (6–13 mm with horizontal field of view 108°–49°) for applications in wide, open areas, and a telephoto lens (15–48 mm with horizontal field of view 42°–13°) for applications where great detail at long distances is required. Both lenses offer remote zoom and focus capabilities.

Standardised design for maximum flexibility

AXIS Q1728 Block Camera is lightweight and compact, and can be flexibly used in common enclosures, including Axis own, as well as custom-made or third-party enclosures. It is also backwards compatible, so it can be installed in existing outdoor housings. This means that housings can be reused – making AXIS Q1728 a particularly sustainable and environmentally friendly solution.

‘With the AXIS Q1728 Block Camera, we have created another future-proof solution for video-based security with excellent image quality,’ says Jochen Sauer, Architect & Engineering Manager at Axis Communications. ’It is based on our new ARTPEC-9 system-on-chip and is therefore able to perform AI-based image analysis even faster, more efficiently and over a greater distance. Thanks to ARTPEC-9, it also supports the AV1 video codec for the first time in video security. AV1 is considered to be significantly more efficient than H.264 and H.265, offering improved compression and delivering high-quality video at lower bit rates. This reduces storage and bandwidth costs without sacrificing forensic detail or clarity. Axis Communications is the first company in the video security industry to introduce AV1 support with the ARTPEC-9.’

Key features of AXIS Q1728 Block Camera at a glance:

  • Excellent image quality in 4K
  • Available with wide-angle or telephoto lens
  • Next-generation AI-powered analytics
  • • First-time support for the AV1 video codec from the Alliance for Open Media (AOM)
  • • Integrated cybersecurity functions thanks to Axis Edge Vault

AXIS Q1728 Block Camera is available now. An outdoor-ready version of the camera, AXIS Q1728-LE Block Camera, will also be available from March 2025.
