Gateway Fiber optimises data centre management with IOLAN console servers

August 13, 2025

Perle Systems, a global provider of advanced network hardware, announces that Gateway Fiber, a leading Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Missouri, Minnesota, Massachusetts and North Dakota, has improved its remote management capabilities by deploying Perle IOLAN console servers. With this strategic move, Gateway Fiber ensures that hundreds of thousands of customers receive reliable high-speed Internet access.

Reliable remote access for critical infrastructure

Gateway Fiber’s network spans multiple states, with micro data centres or points of presence (PoPs) playing a central role in delivering high-speed Internet. The out-of-band access provided by the IOLAN console servers enables administrators to remotely manage devices located at these sites and quickly resolve any issues that arise. This advancement is critical to maintaining uninterrupted service and minimising service outages.

Cost-effective and efficient solution

Initially, Jeff Shilt, Senior Network Engineer at Gateway Fiber, considered using Cisco terminal servers in conjunction with LTE routers. However, this solution proved to be too expensive. Perle’s IOLAN console servers with integrated mobile connectivity offered a more cost-effective and efficient alternative.

‘The IOLAN console server provides the ultimate backdoor connectivity,’ explains Shilt. ‘If a fibre optic cable has been cut or we no longer have direct access, we can get in via LTE and use the serial console ports to access our devices.’

Improved maintenance and upgrades

The IOLAN console servers also simplify maintenance and hardware upgrades. Shilt explains: ‘When we need to perform firmware updates, we can access the devices via the LTE interface as if we were on site. This makes the process easier, faster and more secure.’

In addition, engineers can remotely guide technicians during on-site hardware upgrades, significantly reducing time and travel costs.

Commitment to excellence

Gateway Fiber’s goal is to provide a faster, friendlier and more reliable Internet experience. With data demands on the rise, the company is expanding its fibre-to-the-home platform to meet growing demand.

‘Every new cabinet we build will include an IOLAN for out-of-band access, and these servers are ideal for that. They’re just perfect,’ Shilt sums up.

John Feeney, Chief Operating Officer at Perle Systems, adds: ‘We are delighted to support Gateway Fiber in providing reliable high-speed Internet to underserved communities. Our IOLAN console servers offer robust and secure remote access, enabling Gateway Fiber to maintain its high standards of service and quickly resolve network issues. This partnership demonstrates our commitment to innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers.’
