Pyrobel: The new “multitools” among fire-resistant glass

September 26, 2025

AGC Glass Europe offers many variants of its Pyrobel fire-resistant glass with burglary protection, bullet resistance, or explosion protection. However, combinations would often be useful, especially in buildings that require both burglary protection and bullet resistance. AGC Pyrobel therefore had its bullet-resistant fire-resistant glass tested by ift Rosenheim for burglary protection as well – with positive results: The company can now offer a combination of fire protection (EI30/90), maximum break-in protection (P8B), and bullet resistance (BR4-NS). The test samples “Pyrobel 16 BR4NS” (52.5 mm thick) and “Pyrobel 42 BR4NS” (57.3 mm thick) easily met the requirements of the highest resistance class P8B (break-in resistance according to EN 356:1999-11) in the ift test.

In buildings with high security requirements, such as banks, embassies, government buildings, or infrastructure requiring special security measures, such as power plants or military facilities, bullet-resistant Pyrobel glazing protects people and property. In buildings with slightly lower protection requirements that still have to meet fire protection specifications, such as offices, shops, jewelry stores, museums, schools, or public swimming pools, burglary and break-in protection are particularly important in addition to fire protection. The “Pyrobel 16 BR4NS” and “Pyrobel 42 BR4NS” fire-resistant glass products, which have been successfully tested by ift Rosenheim, now offer a “combined solution” for both requirements and are therefore ideally suited for a wider range of applications.

“Pyrobel 16 BR4NS” offers EI 30 fire protection and, in addition to bullet resistance in accordance with BR4-NS, the highest protection class P8B against break-ins. “Pyrobel 42 SPS” provides EI 90 fire protection, is also certified in accordance with BR4-NS, and also achieves the highest class P8B for break-in protection. BR4-NS certification guarantees that no splinters are released during ballistic testing that could endanger life and property. Break-through protection in accordance with protection class P8B means the highest level of protection against manual attacks using physical force, axes, stone throwing, etc. Pyrobel exterior glazing is color-neutral, transmits plenty of daylight, and offers excellent UV protection—it can also be combined with other functions such as sun protection, heat insulation, and sound insulation.

The company confirmed that the visual quality of the glazing remains excellent over many years, in addition to its technical quality, in UV resistance tests (EN 12543-4) and other tests: Pyrobel exceeded the required 2,000 hours of exposure without any complaints. Even after 5,000 hours, the test samples remained unaffected by the accelerated UV exposure and showed no optical changes whatsoever. [www.agc-pyrobel.com]
