Reliable news: Sony introduces comprehensive video authenticity verification for news media

Sony is strengthening its commitment to video content authenticity by extending its verification technology to a wider range of camera products. This initiative is another important step in providing news organisations with the industry’s first camera authenticity verification solution that is compatible with video and meets the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) standard.

Rapid verification of specific video segments

At the same time, Sony today announces the next stage of its camera authenticity verification solution: The system now enables the verification of videos in addition to still images. This paid service will initially be offered to news organisations. The system not only verifies that video content was actually captured by a camera and not generated by AI or other means, but also uses proprietary metadata, including 3D depth information from the camera, to accurately confirm that the videos show real subjects. In addition, a trim function allows specific video segments to be quickly verified while retaining authenticity signatures, which is particularly efficient for large video files.

To use the signature function in cameras, a digital signature licence and its installation on Sony-compatible cameras are required. Sony will provide digital signature licences for videos, which are required to use the camera’s signature function. In addition, Sony’s cloud-based collaboration platform, Ci Media Cloud, will now display C2PA-compliant digital signature information, improving the authenticity of news content.

Following the launch of the PXW-Z300, the world’s first authenticity-enabled camera for videos this summer, the Sony Alpha 1 II, Alpha 9 III, Cinema Line FX3 and FX30 now support the recording of C2PA-compliant provenance information directly in video files. The Alpha 7R V, Alpha 7 IV and Alpha 1 interchangeable lens cameras are expected to be supported from November 2025 or later, and the Alpha 7S III from 2026.

With these announcements, Sony aims to strengthen the credibility of video content in news reporting and ensure that audiences receive reliable information. With the advancement of generative AI, concerns about the spread of manipulated and synthetic content have increased, especially for news organisations that rely on accurate information. To address this issue, Sony, as a member of the C2PA Steering Committee, has developed a high-precision authenticity solution that complies with the C2PA standard and utilises our proprietary digital signature technology and the use of metadata, including 3D depth information from cameras, to verify image manipulation. In response to growing demand for support in verifying the authenticity of videos, Sony has advanced its technology development through initiatives including conducting verification experiments to verify the authenticity of video content in collaboration with the BBC’s Research and Development Department.
