The protection of art and cultural treasures in museums, galleries and exhibitions presents security managers with special challenges. On the one hand, museum operations should be open and attract as many visitors as possible. At the same time, the public presentation of unique and irreplaceable exhibits harbors numerous security risks. The digital BHE theme day “Security in Museums” on November 9, 2023, will address this area of tension for the second time and offer a comprehensive overview of modern security concepts and technologies in museums. Already the pilot event in autumn 2021 convinced with a versatile and user-friendly event platform.

This year, too, participants can look forward to a varied lecture program via video stream with exciting user contributions on current security technology developments in museums. Among other things, the balancing act between making art accessible and protecting it will be highlighted and helpful recommendations for individual security concepts in museums will be given on the basis of practical examples.

The individual contributions will deal, among other things, with the use of video security and sensor technology in museum operations, the combination of intrusion detection systems with third-party systems for detection and verification, and the effects of cyber security on classic security technology.

The lecture program will conclude with a contribution by Michael John, spokesman for the “Building Management and Security” working group in the German Museums Association (Deutscher Museumsbund e.V.), on the topic of “The interface between construction and museums”. In his lecture, Mr. John will address the assessment of construction measures with regard to their impact on museum operations and will point out associated security risks and possible solutions.
