AMD and OpenAI enter into strategic partnership for 6 gigawatts of AI computing power

October 8, 2025

On 6 October 2025, AMD and OpenAI announced a far-reaching strategic partnership that will equip OpenAI’s AI infrastructure with a total of 6 gigawatts of high-performance GPUs from the AMD Instinct™ series across multiple GPU generations. The first phase of this collaboration includes 1 gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs, which are scheduled to begin deployment in the second half of 2026.

The collaboration combines AMD’s leading expertise in high-performance computing with OpenAI’s pioneering role in generative AI. The goal is to build a scalable, rack-based infrastructure that will meet future AI training and inference requirements. Previous generations – the MI300X and MI350X series – laid the foundation for this long-term collaboration.

To strengthen the strategic partnership, AMD is granting OpenAI warrants for up to 160 million shares. These are linked to milestones: the first tranche will be activated with the initial 1-gigawatt deployment phase, with further tranches to follow when the AI infrastructure is expanded to up to 6 gigawatts. At the same time, these steps are tied to the financial and technical objectives of both companies.

This development is highly relevant for security experts. Building such large-scale infrastructures requires not only enormous computing power, but also robust security architectures. Hardware-assisted security, model monitoring and scaling of secure AI systems are becoming critical issues. The close cooperation between AMD and OpenAI could set new standards in this area.

Jean Hu, CFO of AMD, summarises the significance of the agreement: ‘Our partnership with OpenAI is expected to generate several billion dollars in revenue and create significant value for shareholders.’ Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasises: ‘AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips enables us to make AI available faster and on a larger scale.’

The launch of the first 1-gigawatt phase in 2026 will usher in a new era of AI infrastructure. The partnership between AMD and OpenAI exemplifies how closely chip development and AI research must be intertwined to realise the next generation of intelligent systems.
