Safer Internet Day 2025

February 11, 2025

Safer Internet Day 2025 is celebrated in over 180 countries worldwide and calls on 11 February for all stakeholders – from institutions and companies to private individuals – to work together for a safer digital environment. This year’s motto ‘Together for a better internet’ focuses on the protection of children and young people, as well as raising awareness among internet users of how to use digital media responsibly. For over twenty years, Safer Internet Day has symbolised the effort to increase online security and raise awareness of cybercrime and data protection.

With more than 5 billion internet users worldwide and a constantly growing digital space, the focus is on protecting users from a wide range of threats. Last year alone, over 1.5 million cyber attacks were registered, which underlines the need for education and preventive measures. A central aspect of the day of action is therefore the promotion of educational initiatives that strengthen digital skills and help users to better understand the risks online. In this context, technical tools are also presented, such as the free browser plug-in ‘AQ Detector’ from Anqa IT-Security. This plug-in offers a visual assessment of the security of websites and helps users to identify potential sources of danger at an early stage.

In addition to technical solutions and educational programmes, another focus of Safer Internet Day is to promote the responsible handling of personal data. Recommendations such as using strong, unique passwords, activating two-factor authentication and avoiding public Wi-Fi networks are intended to help increase online security. In addition, there are calls to always ensure that software is up to date and to use proven data protection settings to protect personal information from unauthorised access.

Social media also plays an important role by linking discussions, activities and events around Safer Internet Day via the hashtags #SID25 and #SID2025, both nationally and internationally. This promotes a broad exchange on current security measures and innovative approaches, which should ultimately contribute to better protection and more responsible use of digital media.
