Austria: Another decline in sales of screws and dowels

May 28, 2025

In Austria, the market for screws and dowels declined for the second year in a row in 2024. The contraction was widespread, according to current data from a market study by the market research institute BRANCHENRADAR.com Marktanalyse.

[AUSTRIA | 26 May 2025] A weak order situation in the skilled trades and sluggish DIY activity caused headaches for manufacturers of fastening technology in the previous year. According to the latest BRANCHENRADAR Screws & Dowels in Austria, manufacturer revenues fell by a further 8.5 percent year-on-year in 2024 to a total of just 135.4 million euros.

‘The downturn affected both product groups to roughly the same extent and impacted both the professional segment (craftsmen) and the DIY market (home improvement enthusiasts),’ says study author Aferdita Bogdanovic. Year-on-year, manufacturers’ sales to the relevant wholesale trade and commercial direct business fell by around nine percent, and to the building materials trade and DIY stores by three percent. However, the latter were able to push through a moderate price increase, while the average sales price in the other two distribution channels eroded by around three percent.
