Transport and storage in Germany hardest hit according to the Federal Statistical Office

According to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office, the number of regular insolvencies filed in Germany in June 2025 was 2.4 percent higher than in the same month last year. It should be noted that the results announced today (Friday) only include applications that have been statistically recorded after the initial insolvency court decision. Companies often file for insolvency almost three months in advance.

Significant increase year-on-year

For April 2025, the local courts reported 2,125 corporate insolvencies – 11.5 per cent more than in April 2024. According to the Federal Statistical Office, creditors’ claims from insolvencies reported in April 2025 amounted to around 2.5 billion euros. In the same month last year, these claims amounted to around €11.4 billion. This decline, accompanied by a simultaneous increase in insolvencies, is attributable to the fact that more economically significant companies filed for insolvency in April 2024 than in April 2025.

In April 2025, there were 6.1 corporate insolvencies per 10,000 companies in Germany. Most of these, 11.3 cases per 10,000 companies, were in the transport and storage sector. This was followed by the construction and hospitality industries, with 9.8 insolvencies per 10,000 companies. In April 2025, there were also 6,328 consumer insolvencies – 0.8 percent more than in April 2024.
