Artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly – and with it, the level of autonomy. In production, logistics, service and administrative processes, AI agents are increasingly taking on tasks, making decisions and initiating processes independently. However, this also brings with it growing demands for security, transparency and accountability. The company Augmentir has therefore formulated six practical principles that businesses should observe when deploying autonomous AI systems.
AI agents analyse data streams, prioritise tasks, detect anomalies and provide recommendations – often in real time. According to Gartner, by 2028 as much as 15 per cent of all routine business decisions could already be made autonomously by AI systems. The more these technologies are integrated into operational processes, the more important clear governance structures become. This is because flawed decisions, a lack of traceability or unclear responsibilities can have significant consequences.
1. Decisions must remain traceable
Every step taken by an AI agent should be transparently documented. This includes inputs, data sources used, tools employed, and the resulting outcomes. Only when processes are traceable can decisions be reviewed, corrected and evaluated. AI must not be an opaque system.
2. Responsibility remains with humans
Even when systems act autonomously, it must be clearly established who bears responsibility. Organisations require clear lines of responsibility – whether at management, departmental or process level. Control over AI remains a human task at all times.
3. AI usage must be clearly labelled
If content, recommendations or decisions originate from AI, this should be openly communicated. Users must be able to tell whether they are interacting with a machine or receiving human judgements. Transparent labelling builds trust and prevents false expectations.
4. Labels must not be lost
If AI-generated content is shared internally – for example via collaboration platforms, ticketing systems or intranets – labels and notes must be retained. Transparency does not end at the system boundary, but must be ensured across all platforms.
5. The greater the impact, the more important the approval
As soon as decisions have real-world implications for operations, quality, safety or finances, a human should remain involved. AI can support, evaluate and prioritise – but the final approval for critical actions should be carried out by qualified staff.
6. No autonomous AI in safety-critical areas
Where there are risks to health or life, particularly strict standards are required. In such environments, generative AI should not intervene autonomously. This requires clearly defined processes, verifiable safety mechanisms and human professional responsibility.
Governance becomes a competitive factor
The EU AI Act also establishes a regulatory framework for the trustworthy use of AI. Companies that establish transparent rules, control mechanisms and responsibilities at an early stage not only reduce risks but also strengthen their future viability.
