On the first weekend of the 2025 Munich Oktoberfest, Deutsche Telekom reached a new peak: 49,017 gigabits of data flowed through the network – an increase of over 15 per cent compared to the previous year. This was despite eight per cent fewer users being logged in than in 2024. Telephony also remained strong, with around 400,000 calls made.
5G keeps the festival stable
The 5G mobile communications standard made a decisive contribution: around 40 per cent of all data traffic ran over the modern network. With ten additional mobile communications sites and three sites in festival tents, Deutsche Telekom created a temporary infrastructure with 63 antennas and more than 150 services from 2G to 5G. Each radio cell achieved a capacity of up to 1 Gbit/s – enough to smoothly handle the rush of hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Social media shapes usage
Most of the data revolved around social media: as in previous years, Instagram was clearly in the lead, followed by WhatsApp and Snapchat. Visitors not only enjoyed the festival on site, but also made it visible digitally. International guests – primarily from the USA, Austria and Italy – contributed to the high data volume.
Fibre optic premiere in the tents
New this year is the fibre optic connection of three large festival tents. This provides operators with a significantly more powerful infrastructure that enables digital services such as modern cash register systems and streaming offers. Many showmen still rely on copper lines, but Telekom is planning a gradual switch to fibre optics in the coming years.
Conclusion: The record shows that stable networks are indispensable for large-scale events. With 5G and fibre optics, Telekom is setting new standards for a digital Oktoberfest – reliable, international and future-oriented.
