Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU (RED)

Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/30 supplementing the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU will apply mandatorily from 1 August 2024, opening up a new field of activity for Notified Bodies. From this date, many electronic products will have to undergo a conformity assessment with regard to the essential cyber security requirements set out in the RED before they can be placed on the market in the EU. TÜV SÜD, one of the leading testing and certification companies, supports manufacturers of wireless devices in meeting these requirements.

The Delegated Regulation supplementing the Radio Equipment Directive with regard to the essential cybersecurity and privacy requirements entered into force upon publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. The obligations set out therein are mandatory from 01 August 2024. Manufacturers, importers and distributors placing radio equipment on the market in the European Union (EU) must ensure that their products comply with the requirements of the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU.

TÜV SÜD is approved as a Notified Body in the EU and authorised to assess products for their conformity with the requirements of the RED. The scope of the RED includes electrical or electronic products that emit or receive radio waves for the purpose of radio communication or radio location. These include, among others, radio and terrestrial television receivers.

“TÜV SÜD has accredited test laboratories and highly qualified experts who are very familiar with the regulatory requirements. This means we are ideally placed to support customers around the world,” explains Florian Wolff von Schutter, Head of Cybersecurity of IoT Products and Functional Safety, TÜV SÜD Product Service. “The EU is one of the most important markets for electronic products after China and the USA.1 Moreover, according to forecasts, the European market will continue to grow by 1 to 2 percent annually. It will thus continue to be interesting for manufacturers to secure access to this market.”

TÜV SÜD has published an information paper on the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU. The information paper (in English) and further information worth knowing on the subject of radio equipment can be found here:
