August 11, 2023

At the age of 81, the former chairman of the BDGW, vice president of the BDSW and chairman of the Bavarian regional group of the BDSW passed away on August 9. “Uwe-Dirk Uhlig has shaped the work of both associations for decades,” said Gregor Lehnert, president of BDSW and Michael Mewes, chairman of BDGW. “His death tears a big gap.” Because of his many activities and great services to the “common good,” Uhlig was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon by the German president. In Bavaria, the second largest regional group of the BDSW, he was appointed honorary chairman. “In addition to his commitment and expertise, Mr. Uhlig was highly appreciated by his colleagues in both associations because of his friendly nature and human manner,” Lehnert and Mewes continued.

Uwe-Dirk Uhlig was born in Berlin on July 12, 1942. After working in Kornwestheim, Stuttgart and Kirchheim/Ufr., he became managing director of the Nuremberg Wach- und Schließgesellschaft on January 1, 1985. From the very beginning, he was also involved in association work. For more than 25 years, he was a member of the collective bargaining committee of the BDSW Bavarian regional group. He was elected to the board in 1992, and from 1998 to 2010 he was chairman of the association’s second-largest regional group. In this capacity, he also headed the collective bargaining commission.

On May 9, 1995, Uhlig was elected to the BDWS presidium in Saarbrücken; after almost 15 years, he did not stand for re-election on May 6, 2010. Uhlig was also extremely active in the Bundesvereinigung Deutscher Geld- und Wertdienste e. V. (Federal Association of German Money and Value Services). In 1992, he was elected vice chairman of the BDGW. From 2002 to 2005, he was chairman.

In addition to his honorary activities for BDWS and BDGW, Uhlig was also involved in the Bavarian Association for Security in Business, various committees of the Nuremberg Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and the Economic Advisory Council of the Union.

Uwe-Dirk Uhlig retired on January 1, 2011. “The BDSW and BDGW associations, their members and employees mourn the loss of a great person, a committed collective bargaining politician and honorary association representative. Our thoughts are with his family,” ended the representatives of the associations.
