The Object Detection Orchestra shows how AI-supported analysis can transform network cameras from classic security tools into musical performers

Can network cameras be used to interpret a monumental orchestral work by Richard Strauss? This question, which seems astonishing at first glance, is answered by Axis Communications, a technology leader in network video, with an extraordinary experiment called the ‘Object Detection Orchestra’. For the first time, a classical music work was performed with the help of AI-supported video security cameras and loudspeakers. The experiment impressively demonstrates that modern network cameras can do much more than just provide classic video security.

For the experiment, Axis Communications combined powerful network cameras and loudspeakers with AI-based object detection. Everyday objects such as tennis balls, coffee cups and fire extinguishers were turned into musical impulses: As soon as a specific object moved through the camera’s field of view, certain predefined image areas triggered different sounds. In this way, network cameras, which are typically used for protection and security, were transformed into fully functional musical instruments.

The orchestral work performed is a reinterpretation of Richard Strauss’ ‘Thus Spoke Zarathustra’ – a symphonic poem that became world-famous through Stanley Kubrick’s cult film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’. Strauss is considered one of the most important composers of late Romanticism and early modernism. Swedish music producer Jonas Quant, who has worked with Kylie Minogue, No Doubt and Hurts, took on the creative direction. ‘With this experiment, we wanted to find out what is possible with our network cameras and what potential our AI-powered object detection technology already has,’ says Ghaith Sankari, software engineer at Axis Communications. ‘The result shows that, with the help of AI-based analysis functions, our cameras can now recognise almost any object and trigger different actions in real time. Our customers can use this state-of-the-art technology to work with us to develop advanced, customised solutions that are tailored precisely to their requirements and applications.’

From video security to business intelligence

For the ‘Object Detection Orchestra’, Axis Communications used both its own object detection technology and internal development tools to demonstrate what customised, AI-supported video analysis can already achieve. Such solutions are already being used at Axis Communications in areas such as business intelligence and operational efficiency – far beyond traditional video security applications. At the same time, the company is continuously working on new solutions that will enable almost any object to be captured and identified in real time via video analytics in the future. ‘The “Object Detection Orchestra” creatively demonstrates how our technology can be used today far beyond traditional video security,’ explains Tobias Metsch, Regional Director Middle Europe at Axis Communications. “By using AI-powered video analytics, we are transforming network cameras into intelligent, proactive tools: they automate processes, deliver actionable insights and increase operational efficiency. This not only opens up new application possibilities for our customers, but also new business opportunities.” For over 40 years, Axis Communications has been synonymous with high-performance network technology in the field of video security. Based on this experience, the Swedish company is continuously developing its technology to open up new industries and fields of application – from smart cities, industrial manufacturing and quality control to modern operational intelligence solutions.
