120 years of ÖWD: Security in transition – focus on innovation

March 3, 2026

ÖWD security will celebrate its 120th anniversary in 2026. Since its foundation in 1906, the company has developed from a regional security service in Salzburg to Austria’s leading private security provider. ÖWD is still family-owned and is now in its third generation of management.

For more than a century, the company has stood for reliability, responsibility and quality – values that form the basis for long-term partnerships with companies, institutions and public bodies throughout Austria.

120 years of consistency – trust as a foundation

Continuous family ownership shapes the strategic direction of the company. Long-term thinking, sustainable investments and a clear focus on quality have characterised ÖWD’s development for decades.

‘For 120 years, ÖWD has stood for stability and reliability. We invest in quality, employees and technology for the long term and rely on hybrid security solutions that combine people and technology in an optimal way,’ emphasises Clemens Chwoyka, owner and managing director of ÖWD security. ‘This is how we create sustainable security solutions for businesses, cities and communities throughout Austria.’

Security & patrols: On-site security – 24/7/365

The core of the company’s operations remains its professional on-site security presence. Its range of services includes property and plant security, porter and reception services, event services, patrols and intervention services.

These services ensure comprehensive support and enable the early detection of potential risks and rapid intervention in the event of an incident.

Quality assurance is ensured through certified processes and regular checks. ÖWD also works closely with the Association of Security Companies in Austria (VSÖ).

A central component of the company’s philosophy is the continuous training of its personnel. In addition to practical training courses, the company uses its own e-learning platform to provide ongoing training for security personnel and prepare them for new requirements.

Focus on innovation: hybrid security solutions

In parallel with traditional security services, ÖWD is consistently driving forward its technological development. Investments in digitalisation, automation and intelligent security systems enable tailor-made concepts for companies, industry, cities and municipalities.

The focus is on hybrid security solutions that combine personnel presence with modern technology – including video analysis, alarm and access systems, and digital evaluation and management platforms.

A central element of this strategy is the ÖWD Emergency Call Service Centre (NSC) in Vienna. It is one of the largest and most modern private control centres in Austria and processes up to 1.2 million reports per day.

It thus forms the technological backbone of numerous security concepts developed by the company.

Security as a megatrend

Increasing regulatory requirements, growing digitalisation and more complex risk situations mean that professional security precautions are becoming increasingly important. ÖWD positions itself as a long-term partner for business, industry and the public sector.

After 120 years, the company exemplifies the combination of tradition and innovation: rooted in regional responsibility, strategically focused on hybrid security architectures and digital control centre services.

The anniversary thus marks not only a historical milestone, but also a clear vision for the future – security as an integrated interplay of people, technology and responsibility.
