AI chatbot to assess the urgency of a doctor’s appointment

Researchers at the University of California San Diego are working on an AI-powered chatbot designed to help patients assess their medical symptoms. The aim of the application is to provide guidance, through a digital dialogue, on how urgent a doctor’s appointment is – or whether symptoms can be monitored for the time being.

During conversations with users, the system analyses symptoms, the course of the condition and other details. Based on this information, the chatbot is designed to assess whether immediate medical assistance is required, whether a doctor’s appointment is recommended in the near future, or whether no urgent treatment appears necessary for the time being.

Potential relief for healthcare systems

Such digital triage systems could relieve pressure on healthcare facilities in particular by better managing patient flows and reducing unnecessary visits to A&E departments. At the same time, they could prevent serious symptoms from being underestimated and ensure that necessary treatments are not initiated too late.

An AI-supported pre-triage system could bring additional benefits, particularly in regions with limited access to medical care or long waiting times.

Opportunities and limitations

Despite the potential, its use remains a sensitive issue. Medical AI systems must meet high standards of accuracy, data protection and traceability. Misjudgements could have serious consequences in an emergency – for example, if acute symptoms are underestimated or harmless complaints are overdramatised.

Therefore, such systems can support medical decisions but cannot replace them. Direct medical assessment remains indispensable, particularly in cases of unclear, sudden-onset or severe symptoms.

Digital triage as a model for the future

The approach from San Diego shows the direction in which AI applications in healthcare are developing: away from the mere provision of information towards concrete decision support. Provided regulatory and quality requirements are met, intelligent chatbots could in future play an important role in the initial contact between the patient and the healthcare system.
