BHE: Safety lighting – updated information and obligations for operators

October 24, 2025

Safety lighting systems are very important for personal safety in buildings. In order to ensure that emergency lighting functions properly when needed, regular inspections of the system by qualified persons are required by law and standards. Any defects found must be rectified immediately in accordance with § 4, para. 1 of the Workplace Ordinance (ArbStättV). In practice, such inspections are often neglected because the operator is unaware of their obligations.

To assist operators with the necessary educational work, the BHE provides its members with a sample letter entitled ‘Information and obligations for operators of safety lighting systems’. This document has now been revised by the Technical Committee for Safety Lighting. Among other things, it provides information on the general obligations of operators, the necessary inspections, including inspection intervals, and the qualifications required for this.

The updated version of the sample letter is available as a Word file here for download (login required). You can add your company name and logo or transfer the document to your own letterhead for distribution to your customers.
