Cash centers operated by cash-in-transit companies make a significant contribution to reducing the amount of damage caused by counterfeit money
The latest publication by the Deutsche Bundesbank shows that the financial damage caused by counterfeit money in Germany fell significantly again in 2025. Despite a continued moderate volume of counterfeit money, the total amount of damage was reduced by around 11% compared to the previous year – a result that is highly significant for the protection of cash transactions in Germany.
“The significant reduction in the damage caused by counterfeit money is an important indicator that our cash system is functioning robustly,” said Michael Mewes, Chairman of the BDGW. “This development would not be possible without the dedicated and professional work of our member companies’ cash centers.”
The cash centers of German cash-in-transit companies play a central role in ensuring a reliable cash cycle. Through qualified authenticity checks, the use of modern detection and sorting technologies, and close cooperation with banks and security authorities, they make a decisive contribution to effectively removing counterfeit money from circulation. The combination of modern technology and professional expertise in the cash centers of cash-in-transit companies has contributed significantly to reducing the amount of damage.
“Professional cash processes and qualified specialists create tangible added value for the entire financial system in cash handling. Every day, our members contribute to minimizing risks in the cash cycle – to protect banks, companies, and ultimately citizens,” said Mewes.
At the same time, the BDGW reaffirms the need to continue to focus on the highest standards in counterfeit detection and processing and to further intensify cooperation with partners in the payment system.
