Takeoff Germandrones at Berlin-Tegel Airport

February 2, 2025

Dr Klaus Scho, CEO Germandrones, explains the BEE-H6 heavy-duty drone.

Tegel Airport is where the future of unmanned aviation takes off, flies and lands. Germandrones, one of Germany’s leading drone companies, has settled at the start-up hub. On the evening before their meeting, members of the BDSW’s (Federal Association of the Security Industry) expert committee on communication took the opportunity to visit Germandrones. CEO Dr Klaus Scho welcomed the delegation, led by committee chairman Jonas Timm, and provided fascinating insights into the world of innovative drone technology.

From fully automatic drones to the ‘drone giant’

After a brief introduction to the history of Germandrones, Dr Scho presented his company’s diverse product range. The focus was on two outstanding systems:

the Songbird – the fully automatic VTOL drone

The Songbird fully automatic vertical take-off and landing drone is one of the technological flagships of Germandrones. Thanks to its BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) capabilities, it can also operate beyond the pilot’s line of sight – a key technology for surveillance and security applications.

The BEE-H6 – a real heavy-duty prototype

The BEE-H6, a transport drone with a diameter of over four metres and six rotors, impressed across the board. The plans for the final stage are ambitious: it should be able to carry up to 200 kilograms. The current prototype has already successfully transported 60 kilograms. ‘The possible applications are endless – from fire brigade operations where hoses have to be transported over great heights to supplying remote facilities,’ explained Scho.

A look behind the scenes: production & test flights

The guests were particularly excited about an exclusive tour of the German drone production facilities. From the incoming goods department to the individual production steps and on to the delivery department, the representatives of BDSW, Securitas Deutschland, b.i.g., Turmwächter and the CONDOR Group were able to get a precise picture. ‘Dr Scho was not exaggerating when he pointed out that the Songbird is a very complex system,’ commented Jonas Timm. ‘The different steps involved in assembling the cell alone are impressive.’

Another highlight:

Germandrones is allowed to resume ‘flight operations’ at Tegel Airport in a clearly defined area to test the Songbird. A symbolic moment – from passenger aviation to the unmanned aviation of the future.

Conclusion: innovation meets security industry

The combination of technological innovation and practical applications made the visit of the expert committee a complete success. The drone technology from Germandrones impressively demonstrates how unmanned aerial systems can revolutionise the security industry – from surveillance solutions to logistical heavy-lift drones.
