Smartphones are becoming breeding grounds for germs

According to a BITKOM survey, only one in six Germans usually cleans their device from time to time

According to a study by the digital association BITKOM, the smartphone – often dubbed a ‘news hub’ – is turning into a real breeding ground for germs. This is because only around one in six (17 per cent) of German mobile phone users say they never clean their screen.

1,004 people interviewed

The Berlin-based trade association surveyed 1,004 people in Germany aged 16 and over, including 921 smartphone users – with clear results. Seven per cent clean the screen every few years, whilst a further 17 per cent do so at least once a year, but not monthly.

“Germs do find it harder to settle on the smooth surfaces of modern smartphones. However, anyone who frequently uses their device in dirty environments or with unwashed hands should clean it regularly,” advises Sebastian Klöß (https://www.bitkom.org/Kontakt/Dr-Sebastian-Kloess.html), an expert in consumer technology at BITKOM (https://www.bitkom.org).

Wiping with a sleeve isn’t enough

For hygiene reasons alone, a quick wipe with a sleeve is usually not enough. “For a thorough clean, slightly dampened microfibre cloths or mild cleaning products are recommended,” emphasises Klöß.

Most do this at least once a month: three in ten smartphone users clean it at least once a month, but not weekly. Around a quarter are significantly more consistent: 20 per cent consciously clean their smartphone at least once a week, whilst a further five per cent clean it every day.
