Shopping in the historic bank building

With the EuroShop RetailDesign Award (ERDA), the EHI and Messe Düsseldorf have been honouring the best store concepts worldwide every year since 2008. This year, the expert jury selected the winning stores in the five categories “Food”, “Fashion & Lifestyle”, “Hospitality”, “Digital” and “Sustainability”. A total of 103 entries from 31 countries were received. The winners were particularly convincing with forward-looking sustainability ideas, exciting design stagings and innovative retail projects. The best store concepts come from Germany, Austria, Great Britain and Portugal: Coolblue in Düsseldorf, Adidas Terrex Flagship Store in Munich, Interspar am Schottentor in Vienna, Tessuti Liverpool One in Liverpool and Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Food” category: Interspar am Schottentor, Vienna, Retail Design: KBIA Kulmus Bügelmayer

After more than three years of planning and renovation, the former headquarters of the Vienna Bank Association “Haus am Schottentor” was converted into a new Interspar store in spring 2021. The listed building is still considered a landmark for new bank buildings throughout Europe. The historic substance of the building was preserved and merely adapted to the requirements of the new use. The branch, which focuses on snacks and hot meals, is intended to attract mainly urban and student customers as well as employees of the surrounding offices. On around 1,700 sqm, the menu includes Panini and regional meat and fish specialities. Also new is the “Mezzanin” gastronomy concept, the supermarket chain’s first à la carte restaurant.

Category “Fashion & Lifestyle”: Tessuti Liverpool One, Liverpool, Retail Design: Counterfeit Studio

The fashion house Tessuti, founded in 1985, is a popular shopping destination for designer collections with its branches. The new flagship opened in August 2022 and covers an area of more than 2,000 sqm over three floors. The store design features a combination of historic Liverpool engineering, classic Italian style and modern digital elements. For example, there is a large XL screen in the middle of the store. In addition, materials such as terrazzo, brass and marble run through all floors of the shop and refer to the company’s Italian roots. Neon-coloured lights and orange fabrics, brushed stainless steel surfaces and red tiles underline the modern character of the store.

Category “Hospitality”: Casa Portuguesa do Pastel de Bacalhau, Vila Nova de Gaia, Retail Design: Grupo O Valor do Tempo

After its renovation in spring 2021, the historic warehouse in Vila Nova de Gaia recalls Portugal’s history with the typical production of cheese and wine. The store concept showcases the country’s highlights: gastronomy and culture. Hourly live organ concerts by changing artists provide a musical backdrop to the shopping experience. The colour red dominates the store design in reference to the Portuguese flag, while golden tones recall Portugal’s heyday. A 320 kg chandelier on the ceiling rounds off the magnificent ambience.

Category “Digital”: Coolblue, Düsseldorf, Retail Design: Desarc

The first shop of the online electronics retailer Coolblue has been located in Düsseldorf since the end of 2021. The Dutch retail chain also wants to pursue its omnichannel strategy in this country, in which digital and stationary sales channels are interlinked. Customers can test product samples on site and compare them with other items in the online shop and order them from the shop. In addition, the Coolblue app offers detailed product information and further advisory services, including augmented reality functionalities. For example, customers can virtually place TV screens in their homes to determine the optimal size of their new TV set. Click & Reserve, Click & Collect and the possibility of mobile payment round off the digital offer in the store.

Category “Sustainability”: Adidas Terrex Flagship-Store, Munich, Retail Design: Adidas Design Team and Checkland & Kindleysides with Stadler Interior Services

Since November 2021, sports enthusiasts have been able to shop in the Adidas Terrex flagship store. The first flagship store of the outdoor division of Adidas in Europe offers a sales area of 378 sqm and focuses on the themes of sustainability and regionality. The interior design of the shop is made of natural, resource-saving and recyclable materials. The customer experience will be enhanced by on-site services and digital in-store tools. In addition, Adidas wants to integrate its own outdoor community more strongly with the store and promote regular exchange. Interested parties will be introduced to outdoor sports and like-minded people will be connected with each other.
