Symeo at the 33rd International Crane Conference

The operating principle of LPR-SAFE: a safe distance value is determined by comparing two measured values in the function block.

Symeo GmbH, which specialises in industrial radar systems, will be taking part in the International Crane Conference at the Hotel Ratswaage in Magdeburg on 5 and 6 March 2025.

Alexander Meier, Senior Principal Embedded Software Engineer at Symeo, will give a lecture on ‘Safe crane positioning under harsh conditions’ at the event (Otto-von-Guericke hall, 6 March, 1:15 p.m.). Among other things, the lecture will cover LPR®-SAFE – the latest solution from the experts in position detection, distance measurement and collision avoidance. The demonstrator for this radar system, which enables radar-based distance measurement with functional safety, will be shown during the conference in the Bernburg room on the first floor of the Ratswaage hotel

Symeo’s patented radar systems have been proven in numerous industrial plants, ports and other logistics environments for decades, for example to prevent collisions between cranes and loads. With LPR-SAFE, Symeo is now expanding the functionality of existing systems to meet the highest safety requirements. The system is certified according to the EN ISO 13849 PLd standard and enables safe distance measurement based on redundant radar sensors. LPR-SAFE is expected to be available from mid-2025, once certification is complete.

Certified functional bloc

With LPR-SAFE, manufacturers can integrate a pre-certified solution when developing functionally safe lifting gear installations. The Symeo solution is based on an EN ISO 13849-PLd-certified functional bloc on a fail-safe PLC and redundant measurement of distances with radar sensors. A major advantage of this approach is that the solution can be retrofitted wherever Symeo LPR-1DHP-291 (60 GHz) or LPR-1D24 (24 GHz) radar sensors are already in use. All that is needed is an additional sensor pair for redundant measurement and the fail-safe Siemens S7 PLC with the certified function block that compares the distance measurements and confirms that they match as functionally safe.
