Thinking Ahead on Security: Detect Earlier, Act Faster

Security Autumn 2026 showcases an industry in transition. Cameras are becoming smarter, sensors more sensitive, access rights more digital and control centres more powerful. Yet perhaps the most important development is not taking place within individual products. It is emerging between systems – where information is collated, assessed and translated into a concrete response.

The Munich Oktoberfest’s new security concept is a recent example of this. AI-supported crowd monitoring can help to identify critical crowd densities at an earlier stage. However, what remains crucial to the effectiveness of security measures is how quickly this information is transformed into a shared situational picture, a decision and, ultimately, an intervention. It is precisely this interconnection of detection, assessment and response that runs through the entire security industry in various forms.

Security Essen 2026 also highlights this transformation. Video security is no longer solely about higher resolutions. AI, edge analytics, generative methods, thermal imaging, radar and 3D LiDAR are designed to turn images and sensor signals into actionable information. Sensor fusion brings detection and verification closer together, whilst platforms increasingly integrate video, access control, intrusion detection and other systems into a single, unified system.
This is also transforming the control centre. Its role is no longer simply to display ever more alerts and camera images on an ever-increasing number of monitors. It must filter out, in a timely manner, the information needed to enable decision-making from a growing volume of data. Risk management, the cloud, AI and open interfaces are therefore becoming the building blocks of an architecture in which the ability to take action becomes the actual goal of digitalisation.
A second major strand concerns digital identity. Smartphones, mobile credentials, biometrics and centrally administered authorisations are now used alongside keys and ID cards. As a result, access control has simultaneously become an IT security task: encryption, protection against tampering, secure communication and system availability are now integral to physical security.
Fire safety, too, demonstrates how significantly the focus of competition is shifting towards the temporal dimension. Aspirating smoke detectors, thermal detection and intelligent signal processing are designed to detect hazards earlier whilst reducing false alarms. Alarm notification no longer ends with the siren: apps, voice alerts, control centres and risk management are becoming integral parts of a seamless alarm and response chain.
Added to this are drones, hybrid threats, cyber-attacks and the protection of critical infrastructure. Resilience therefore increasingly means being able to consider different risks collectively – and remaining capable of taking action even when individual systems or infrastructure fail. At the same time, the shortage of skilled workers is forcing operators to deploy technology in a more targeted manner: not as a substitute for people, but to direct their attention to the situations where it is actually needed.
And finally, the market itself is changing. Platformisation, AI, and mobile and networked systems are no longer the preserve of individual manufacturers. The exhibitors in Hall 2, in particular, demonstrate just how quickly even traditional OEMs and component manufacturers are developing their own software, cloud services and management platforms. Technological competition is becoming increasingly international – whilst certification, cybersecurity, data protection and long-term service remain key differentiating features of the European market.
